A chin implant is a biocompatible insert used in surgical chin augmentation to enhance facial harmony and structure. These implants are designed for both reconstructive and aesthetic purposes, helping to correct a recessed chin, improve jawline definition, and create a more balanced profile. By restoring symmetry and proportion to the face, a chin implant can boost confidence and provide long-lasting results.
Dr. Jennifer Levine is one of the few surgeons in the country who is double-board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). This underscores Dr. Levine’s unparalleled understanding of facial anatomy and the advanced techniques required to perform delicate facial procedures. Benefits of Chin Implants
A chin implant procedure can help create a more defined jawline and add projection for individuals who have a “weak” or recessed chin. Additionally, chin implants are effective in addressing facial asymmetries or irregularities resulting from genetics, aging, or past injuries, helping to achieve a balanced appearance. (2)
Patients often find that chin augmentation not only enhances their facial proportions but also boosts their self-confidence. By achieving a more harmonious profile, individuals often experience a renewed sense of self-esteem and satisfaction with their appearance.
Candidates
The ideal candidates for a chin implant procedure are patients interested in enhancing the symmetry and balance between their chin and other facial features. Patients are also often interested in improving the definition of their jawline and the projection of their chin to address a softer jawline or a recessed chin. Candidates should be in good overall health, with no underlying medical conditions that could interfere with the procedure or the healing process.

Personal Consultation
A personal consultation with Jennifer Levine MD is an essential first step. During the consultation, Dr. Levine will evaluate your facial features, including the proportions of your chin in relation to the rest of your face. This personalized assessment allows her to recommend the most appropriate approach to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
The consultation is a collaborative experience. Dr. Levine encourages patients to share their concerns, goals, and expectations while asking any questions they may have about the procedure. Together, you will design a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and preferences.
You will also receive a detailed overview of the procedure, recovery process, and preparation guidelines. Additionally, we will discuss the cost of the chin implant procedure and explore any complementary treatments that may enhance overall results.
Our team is dedicated to ensuring each patient feels fully informed and comfortable before moving forward with their procedure. Preparation
Our patient care team will provide personalized preparation instructions to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery. Following these instructions closely is crucial for optimizing your experience and results.
Common steps include discontinuing tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol use a few weeks before the scheduled procedure, as these can interfere with the healing process. Patients also may be asked to temporarily cease certain medications or supplements to ensure an optimal recovery.
Many patients find it helpful to plan meals that require minimal chewing, as softer foods can reduce discomfort during the healing process. Patients should also pre-arrange their transportation to and from their treatment, and arrange for any necessary assistance for the first 24-48 hours of recovery.
Procedure
The procedure starts with anesthesia being administered to enhance patient comfort. This procedure can be done under different types of anesthesia, but many patients receive local anesthesia. An incision will then be made either in a discreet place under the chin or inside the mouth. These placements are known as a submental incision and intraoral incision, respectively. (1) These incision placements are chosen to help hide and minimize any potential scarring. Dr. Levine will then carefully place a chin implant over the chin bone. The procedure can take anywhere between 1-2 hours depending on the chosen treatment method and the adjustments needed. (1) Chin implant surgery is performed in our state-of-the-art, private surgical suite located across the hall from our main office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Recovery and Results

After a chin implant procedure, patients can expect to experience a moderate amount of discomfort at the treatment site. It is normal for patients to experience slight swelling and bruising. Dr. Levine recommends only consuming softer foods during this phase of recovery to help minimize discomfort.
Most patients find that they can return to work after 7-10 days of healing. However, patients should continue to avoid any intense physical activity for about 6 weeks following the procedure, or as advised by their surgeon. The final results of the procedure can take up to 3-6 months to develop as the swelling subsides and the chin implant settles into place.
Corresponding and Combination Procedures
While Dr. Levine may recommend that you wait until after you are done healing from a chin implant procedure before choosing to undergo additional procedures, there are several other treatments we offer at our practice that promote enhanced harmony across the facial features.
Submental Liposuction
Submental liposuction, often referred to as chin liposuction, is a surgical procedure specifically designed to remove excess fat from the area beneath the chin, commonly referred to as a “double chin.” This procedure aims to enhance the definition of the jawline and improve overall neck contouring. In many cases, submental fat is stubborn and difficult to address with diet and exercise alone, making submental liposuction an effective solution for patients who experience this issue.
Buccal Fat Removal
Buccal fat removal is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the fullness of the cheeks by removing excess buccal fat pads. These fat pads are small, rounded deposits located in the lower part of the cheeks, and can contribute to a round or chubby appearance in the face. Patients often seek buccal fat removal to enhance their facial contouring, achieve a slimmer look, or create a more defined jawline.
Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is a procedure designed to reshape the nose through the restructuring of tissue, cartilage, and bone. Like the chin implant procedure, this procedure can be performed for both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes and can make a significant difference in one’s facial harmony and appearance.
Lower Face and Neck Lift
A lower face and neck lift procedure is a treatment that removes excess skin from the neck to enhance the smoothness and definition of the chin and jaw. If a patient has undergone weight loss or experienced skin laxity as a result of the natural processes of aging, it is common to experience a significant amount of loose skin in this area. A lower face and neck lift can also use liposuction techniques to remove stubborn pockets of fat.
