How does PRP work?
As shown in this NEWBEAUTY feature of Dr. Levine performing a Vampire Facial, PRP treatment uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets. PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production which thickens and tightens thinning skin, effectively smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. Because it boosts collagen, it’s also a great treatment for improving overall skin texture and tone.
What is the PRP Treatment like?
Don’t let the name deter you! The Vampire Facial is neither scary nor painful. Here is how the treatment will go: One of our experienced medical staff takes a small sample of your blood and places it in a centrifuge to isolate plasma and platelets from red cells. This protein-rich plasma is what helps stimulate collagen production when infused into the skin of your face. The red cells are not used in the treatment. While the plasma is being separated and prepared, our team will apply a topical numbing cream to your skin.We then inject the plasma into your forehead, cheeks, and other parts of your face to make sure it travels deep into the skin, where its collagen-boosting can take place.Once the treatment is completed, you may feel some superficial discomfort on your face and redness, both of which resolve within the following day.
Why is it called a Vampire Facial?
You may recognize this selfie of Kim Kardashian that she took while getting the PRP treatment. The injection of the plasma into the skin leaves small marks of blood, just as Botox injections would.
Because the injections are more frequent and closely-spaced, the bloody appearance is more prominent.
As you can see in the photo, the blood is simply wiped off – once you’re done taking a selfie, of course!
What are the typical results?
As with any natural collagen-boosting treatment, results can take a few weeks to show up. Generally, patients report their skin beginning to feeling tighter, glowing and overall healthier within several days.
Results can last several months.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments necessary depends on your goals. PRP treatment is often used as an overall rejuvenating facial, in which case you can plan to have it every quarter for upkeep.
For patients who are using PRP treatments to resolve scarring, uneven skin texture or problem areas, 4-6 treatments at 2-week intervals are recommended to start.
What other treatments are recommended?
A double-board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Levine addresses patients’ concerns on all levels of tissue. Dr. Levine often recommends PRP as part of a combination treatment, which may include Ultherapy®, cosmetic fillers and other non-invasive treatments that produce anti-aging results.
